✨celebrate yourself✨ it doesn’t matter whet ✨celebrate yourself✨

it doesn’t matter
whether you’re on the edge of seventeen filled to the brim with life,
or old and grey with eighty six years’ worth of stories—

we have all been built by the same golden hands of time
and carved by the strength of memories.

a natural longing
for dreams and foresight
propel us to move forward
despite the storms of the heart or of life itself,
in all its ugly, glorious grandeur.

so take time to celebrate you:
your revolutions around the sun,
your tears,
all the pieces of your glass heart shattered on the floor,
your laughter, your words,
and all your golden days.
**you are,
and always will be.

Of all the pictures I’ve had taken over the years for work, this is by far one of my favorites.

Laughing at my awkward attempts to perch on the rocks and trying to get my hair away from my eyes, this candid moment is so much more to me than good natural lighting, composition and the smile on my face.

It’s special because my teenage daughter was my photographer that day. The engraving behind me (found later during edits) is a sweet coincidence.

This one didn’t make the cut for the headshots I needed, but I like it because I look happy and it reminds me that there’s Magic and Beauty in the process of making, of creating, of living and this life.

Here’s to celebrating another revolution around the sun!

Self-Care Sunday: Get your feet on the ground! Li Self-Care Sunday: Get your feet on the ground! Literally.

Today’s post is to encourage you to take yourself outside for a walk! Get grounded, move your body, boost your mood and support overall health and well-being.

If the weather allows and you have a place to do so, consider taking your shoes off and get some sand, soil or grass in direct contact with your feet. Studies show that this practice of “grounding” can help boost endorphins, increase energy, reduce stress and can even promote a better night’s sleep.

Bundled up in cooler weather or barefoot on the beach, your body will thank you for the movement, fresh air and change of scenery. You might even sleep more soundly tonight.

DeSlumber2023 Day 5: Temporal Tension Tamer If y DeSlumber2023 Day 5:

Temporal Tension Tamer

If you’re looking for tension relief in the temporal zone or need some help unwinding after a long day, you’ll want to keep this myofascial release work in your self-care toolbox!

Of course you can target the temples with just your fingertips (as demonstrated in a previous post), but working with a @yogatuneup therapy ball (or even a tennis ball) can offer a deeper, effective and even more relaxing approach.

Rest on your side with a block or firm pillow beneath your head. Place the therapy ball (or a tennis ball) above the ear and near the hairline. With the weight of the head resting on the ball, pause and be still (sustained compression). Breathe. Then slowly turn your head right and left to roll the ball side to side.

If you need to keep applied pressure here to a minimum or you discover that the weight of the head on the ball causes too much intensity (beyond a tolerable level of discomfort), work with the ball at the upper side of the head at the temporal area. Use the palm of the hand to create a slow, circular motion. Then pause and apply gentle, steady pressure.

Note that this technique (using the hand to roll the ball) can be done in an upright position as well.

Be sure to roll out both sides.

If you give this a try, I’d love to hear how it works for you! Comment below or send a message ✉️

DeSLUMBER 2023 Day 4 Need to reset? Put your legs DeSLUMBER 2023 Day 4

Need to reset? Put your legs up the wall and “press pause.”

You’ll need a blanket, a yoga mat (or firm but comfortable surface) and of course….a wall.

This is a simple shape, but for some, it can be a challenge to get set up at the most suitable distance of the hips to the wall.

To set up with ease and minimize inching toward or away from the wall with the “caterpillar move” try sitting right next to the wall before coming down to your side and rolling onto your back.

Some tips: If the back of the legs resist the position and/or the fronts of the thighs are engaging, try moving the hips a bit further away from the wall. Also, consider that if the hips are too far away from the wall, the back of the knees are likely to feel a strong sensation of stretch, which will be quite distracting and uncomfortable. You’ll want to move your hips closer to the wall.

If that doesn’t seem to be working out, explore putting your legs up on a chair or couch instead for a variation of #constructiverestpose .

Pro tip: set a timer for 7-10 minutes. More if you have the time and feel at rest in the pose.

Enjoy!

DeSlumber 2023 Day 3: Releasing tension from the DeSlumber 2023 Day 3:

Releasing tension from the jaw and face can help reduce stress, relieve headaches and promote a more relaxed state of being.

Try this sequence of gentle self-massage points before you settle in for a period of rest or anytime you notice yourself feeling tense or stressed.

✨Temporalis: fingers at temple area.  Above ear and into the hairline. Apply firm but gentle pressure, moving the scalp in a circular pattern to massage the thin musculature beneath.

✨Jaw:  Place thumbs below the arch of the cheek bone and above the jaw, in the hollow of the cheeks.  Rest the weight of your head forward slightly into the thumbs. Slacken the jaw, move lower jaw side to side. Clench the jaw.  Release.

✨Brow:  Thumbs just underneath the eyebrows near the nose. Lean head forward slightly to apply gentle pressure.

✨Forehead:  Position fingertips at the center of the forehead.  Press gently, sweeping up, outward and down to complete the arc at the temples.

✨Ears:  Hold the earlobes near their connection point at the side of the head.  Slowly, gently pull down.  Reset to hold the mid-ear area - tug back.  Then hold the tops of the ears to pull upward.

Release.  Draw a deep breath in followed by a relaxed breath out.  Notice how you feel and let me know how this worked for you in the comments.

DeSlumber 2023 Day 2: Roll It Out! Feeling tight DeSlumber 2023 Day 2: Roll It Out!

Feeling tight in your shoulders and upper back? Unwind, relieve tension and feel more relaxed with self-myofascial release.

All you need is a ball and a clear wall space. The @yogatuneup Therapy balls are highly recommended, but if all you have is a tennis ball, that can fill in!

I love this technique at the wall! It’s great for beginners and experienced rollers alike and allows for easy control of pressure and ball placement.

Pay attention to your breathing as you roll. If your breath shortens or you’re holding your breath, the pressure is likely too deep and you may need to back off. While at times the work can be a bit uncomfortable, it should never be painful. Please listen to your body and respond honestly.

As you turn the torso away from the wall to roll the ball to the upper back, dock the ball in BETWEEN the shoulderblade and spine. Moving the arm around in a circle is a good way to feel for the ball placement. Dip hips down and up to roll out tension. You can also pause, sustain the compression and breathe!

Be sure to roll out both sides! When your’e done, notice how you feel in your shoulders, upper back and neck. Ah, sweet relief!!! Next time you’re feeling tense, tight or stressed, get on the ball and roll it out!
