CLEAN BEAUTY

I believe that BEAUTY IS AN INSIDE JOB.  The water we drink, the food we eat, the thoughts we think, the words we speak, how we move the body, our actions in the world; all of those things have an impact on how we look and feel.  And of course what we put ON our bodies matters too!

TRUE BEAUTY RADIATES from within and there is nothing more beautiful than someone who feels beautiful from within.

‘My skin has honestly never looked better!’

Beauty is an Inside Job

Consider that our skin is one of the largest organs of the body, serving as a protective barrier, thermal regulator, a reservoir and synthesizer of Vitamin D, and contains an expansive network of nerve cells that detect and relay sensory information of pain, heat, cold, touch, pressure, etc.

What we use to topically care for or embellish that part of our body can have far-reaching, cumulative effects.

Once upon a time, possibly like some of you, I didn’t realize that when I applied sunscreen, lotion, shampoo or the dozens of other products that I use daily, that I was applying toxic chemicals directly to my skin and that some of these chemicals can get absorbed into the bloodstream, potentially leading to health issues down the road.

I assumed that since we live in such a highly regulated country, the products I was using must be safe. I was so surprised when I finally learned that when it comes to the personal care industry, there are very minimal regulations.

Companies are allowed to use known toxins—ingredients that have been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and hormone disruption—without even disclosing these ingredients to consumers!

Luckily, it’s not all doom and gloom. There are a number of companies working hard to create safe skincare products and to change the industry to help protect the consumer, not just the company’s bottom line.

I’ve been spending time researching different companies for solutions and I am excited to share what I’ve learned with you and to inspire you to make safer choices!

Did You Know?

1938 – The last year the U.S. Federal Government passed a law regulating cosmetics.

Yes, you read that right! 1938! Are you as shocked as I am by this?

1300 – The number of harmful chemicals banned or restricted from cosmetics in the European Union

And wait for it….

30 – The number of harmful chemicals banned or restricted from cosmetics in the United States.

And only about 10% of the approximately 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products have any available safety data.

Over 95% – The percentage of popular lipsticks which contained lead according to a recent lab test.

Researchers at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health published a study in 2013 that detected lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals in many popular brands of lipsticks and lip glosses commonly found in drugstores and department stores.

The study also noted that children are especially susceptible to heavy metal accumulation and should not play with make up. Think of all the young girls that apply make-up daily or even multiple times a day…

Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (including, but not limited to asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility) are on the rise, and due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals—whether it’s in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home.
What’s worse is the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics) allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful (lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates) in the products we put on our bodies and on our kids every single day, day after day.

Be Safe. Be Beautiful. Start with what you put on your skin.

We deserve better! It’s time to do something about it and this is why I’ve partnered up with Beautycounter.

At Beautycounter, we’ve banned more than 1,500 ingredients setting a new health and safety standard— all while ensuring our products perform, and that they’re as indulgent as any luxe shampoo, lipstick or oil in the market. I didn’t only fall in love with Beautycounter because their products are safe and high performing, but I wanted to work with a company that is working to create real change. Beautycounter is dedicated to making changes on the legislative level and is on the front lines of the safe skin care movement. They are taking action in Washington and working to reform the current laws, in hopes that other skin care companies will follow their strict safety guidelines. They also work very closely to support 3 non-profit organizations that are doing great work to reduce our amount of chemical exposure.

These products work extremely well and are comparable to the luxurious brands sold at department stores, except they are void of the harsh chemicals and potentially harmful ingredients.

At our house, we use Beautycounter’s children’s and adult shampoos, face wash, moisturizer, face oils and all the make-up. I haven’t tried a Beautycounter product that I didn’t absolutely love!

certified b corp

Beautycounter is a certified B Corporation. The B stands for “benefit,” and it means that, unlike the traditional corporate structure, they consider people, planet, and profits equally.

Beautycounter uses the power of business to help solve social and environmental problems by voluntarily meeting higher standards of transparency, accountability, and performance.

Now, let’s talk about some actual products!

Beautycounter is dedicated to product performance, as much as product safety. After trying countless non-toxic cosmetic brand, I can tell you that this combination of non-toxic ingredients and products that work is extremely rare.

Some natural cosmetic brands use only 100% organic ingredients. This is as pure as makeup can get, but often, the performance is lacking. While Beautycounter uses both synthetic and organic ingredients, they never compromise on the safety of the ingredients. Beautycounter has developed a groundbreaking and rigorous ingredient screening process, looking for data on skin irritation, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, cumulative exposure (are we exposed to this chemical from other sources) and more.
